What I've learned....the side cramp edition

Remember that post I wrote back in December about all the things I needed to learn about running?

You don't?!

One of the things on my list was "how to avoid side cramps." I've read many running blogs, magazines and forums and have learned that no one really knows why people get side cramps or stitches. No one knows how to get rid of them, either.

So, I took it upon myself to test out some theories. Seeing as how I get them all the freaking time I've been able to test many ideas.

I can tell you that....

walking won't make them go away.
running slower won't make them go away.
running faster won't make them go away.
breathing differently won't make them go away.
jamming your fingers into your side won't make them go away.
stretching won't make them go away.
doubling over won't make them go away.
drinking water won't make them go away.
putting your arm over your head won't make them go away.
yelling at them won't make them go away.
ignoring them won't make them go away.
crying won't make them go away.
coughing won't make them go away.
running uphill definitely won't make them go away.
running downhill often causes them to appear.
adjusting my eating habits before my run doesn't seem to have any effect.

I can also tell you that many people have asked "are you hydrating properly before you go out for your run?".  To which I will answer....probably not. I am terrible at drinking water. I know this. I try to drink more, but water is so boring! I know this will probably help with the side stitch issue. I just need to remember to drink a ton of water the day before my next long run to test it out.

I've also read that the more you run the less you'll get side cramps. We'll I feel like I'm running a lot, so that can kick in any time now.

Enough of the side cramp talk, it's time for a laugh! I went for a run on Sunday and didn't realize before I left that it was w i n d y out. I'm talking 16mph winds, which of course I was running into as I was running uphill at the end of my run. Way to plan, Cathy.

This is what my hair looked like when I got home.

Once I looked in the mirror I realized why the neighbor gave me a weird look. I looked like I had just stuck my finger in a light socket. And I was wearing a shirt that said "Get Lucky". Some days just aren't your day.

Holy crap. Your hair...is...awesome.
Also, I think jamming your fingers in your side DOES help. So nanny nanny booboo.

Since I've been running less time I won't pretend like I know all. Our coaches tell us though that we should be drinking enough all week leading up to the run and that if you try and get it all in the 24 hours in advance it won't work. I can't really speak to the difference though because I'm a water addict. I do take two bottles with me on the long runs. One is water the other has a nuun (electrolytes) tab in it. I'm also big on gu chomps and have 1 every 2 miles. Apparently the hydrating and fueling keeps all the stuff on the inside working properly so there's no accidents or anything :)

Your hair is freaking awesome. I can't comment on the running stuff bc I'm lazy & know nothing about running.

Oh my gosh, I am the QUEEN of getting side cramps! I even get them on the elliptical (pathetic, huh?) I really think it is the hydration thing, but I have tried pretty much everything you have on your list, though. LOVE the hair, by the way!

I wonder if you can buy a wig that looks like your hair...that look would fit in so well when visiting Vegas :-)

Drink water. Leland is insane about nagging me to drink water and it definitely helps. I can't promise it will solve your problem, but it just may help,

By the way, when I saw that shirt my first thought was "wow, with that hair she looked like she just did get lucky." That should definitely always be your reason for having such awesome wind blown hair.

I would have been dead after a run, so I'd say the hair is awesome.. love the shirt too. Seems like a winner. :)

A) Rad hair!!

2) My (runner of triathlons and marathons who once hiked the entire Appalachian trail) friend told me that when you're running, if you get a side cramp, to stomp the opposite (I think) foot while still running. It required more coordination than I had, but it actually worked! I sort of ended up stomping both feet though, because I'm a graceful ballerina. (And also really not.)
